Alunperin Berg kiinnostui Jukka Lahden murhasta ja sen poliisitutkinnasta siksi, että oli ystävystynyt Anneli Auerin kanssa asuessaan tämän naapurina ja toisaalta siksi, että murhasta oli mediassa esitetty erikoisia ja osin ristiriitaisia tietoja. Lakinaisena Bergin kiinnostuksen herätti kuitenkin eniten se, miten jutun todistusaineisto oli jyrkästi jakanut tuomarien mielipiteet. Berg halusi tietää miksi ja millä perusteilla Aueria oli epäilty, syytetty ja jopa tuomittu miehensä murhasta.

On tärkeää, että oikeus toteutuu, murha ratkaistaan ja syyllinen saadaan vastuuseen, mutta yhtä tärkeää on, ettei syytöntä tuomita. Berg tutki esitutkinta- ja oikeudenkäyntimateriaalia ja tuomioita, kuunteli oikeussali-, hätäpuhelu- ja rekonstruktio-tallenteita sekä teki omia täydentäviä tutkimuksiaan. Hänellä oli lisäksi pääsy tapaukseen liittyvään salattuun aineistoon. Mitä enemmän hän tutki tapausta, sitä kummallisempia asioita paljastui. Lopulta Berg piti tärkeänä kirjoittaa kirja mahdollisesti yhdestä räikeimmistä poliisin väärinkäytöksistä Ulvilan murhatutkinnassa.

Originally, Berg became interested in Lahti's murder and its police investigation because she had befriended Anneli Auer while living next door to her and also because the media had presented unusual and partly contradictory information about the murder case. As a lawyer, Berg was most intrigued by how the evidence had sharply divided the judges' opinions. Berg wanted to find out why and on what grounds Auer had been suspected, charged, and even convicted of murder.

It's important that justice is served, the murder is solved and the perpetrator is made to answer for his actions, but it's just as important that no innocent people are convicted. Berg researched the material of the pre-trial investigation and trials, as well as with the judgments passed. Berg listened to the courtroom, emergency call and reconstruction recordings and also conducted her own investigations. She also had access to the classified material in the case. The more she investigated the case, the stranger things were revealed. Eventually, Berg found it important to write a book of possibly one of the most flagrant malpractices by the police in the Ulvila murder investigation.
